Pingali Venkayya

Pingali Venkayya was an Indian Freedom Fighter, born on 02-AUG-1876, in a Telugu Brahmin family in Andhra Pradesh.He joined the British Indian Army at the age of 19 and served in the Anglo-Boer war in South Africa.

Venkayya held a doctorate in Geology, he also set up an educational institution in his hometown Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. He was also proficient in many languages including Urdu and Japanese. This Gandhian lived in poverty in his entire life and breathed his last in a hut in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh in 1963. Very few people know that Venkayya was one of the designers of the National Flag.



pingali_venkayya2A postage stamp was issued to honour his contributions for the Freedom Struggle in 2009. In 1921, Pingali presented the red andgreen flag. Lala Hansard of Jalandhar suggested adding a ‘Charkha’ and Gandhiji requested a white stripe.
